I have my DVD-ROM and DVD writer on the same IDE channel as "Cable Select" as recommended by Dell; however, my rip speed starts around 2x and then may go up to 3.5-4... (not really stellar)
I have DMA enabled on both.
Any reason I should change from Cable select and go the slave/master configuration. Should this really matter?

CS select is used by computers sellers like Dell to speed the assemly process and has no effect drive speed. It simply allows the IDE cable to select master/slave instead of setting jumpers, you still need to set the CS jumper and use a special IDE cable.

I've never liked using CS. I would have the ROM as a slave and the burner as Master
seeing as you wouldn't be using the burner I don't see why your ROM shouldn't rip at a decent speed
do you have any idea what model your ROM is?
if you don't then DVDInfo will tell you

I have a Dell Dimension 4500 - the stock Samsing Combo drive that came with it - and a new LG 4040B DVD burner. I've used both CS and the master/slave settings...no difference in ripping speed.

Thanks hech54. Now I don't have to go the exercise of moving everything around.

I read in a PCWorld article that you should always put your burner on master. Acording to them, it is more reliable.

I have heard this too and it's complete and utter bullshit, unless your machine sucks.
Sadly, 99% of people's machines SUCK.
If your machine says "Dell", "HP", "Compaq" or "Gateway"... it sucks.
My burner has always been, is, and until they make SATA burners will always be slaved off the DVD-ROM. And it works 100% of the time, flawlessly.

Gurm,
And if your burner was Master on the channel with the ROM, it would work flawlessly, so long as you are sending the rendered video to it from the other IDE channel.
As long as only 1 device on that cable is communicating with the machine, you get full data thru put.
It's when you are taking turns that data transmission slows down.
The only way around this is an add on card, 4 devices, 4 individual channels, no interrupts.
Master slave has no bearing, just not 2 devices on the same cable interrupting each other. It IS why they call them interrupts.
Cheers,
George. -
Well....my LG is on the same channel as my Samsung DVD-CDR combo drive and I can do anything....rip with both....burn CD's with both...copy both CD and DVD "on the fly"....anything I want....so I agree with gmatov.
As far as this comment goes:
"If your machine says "Dell", "HP", "Compaq" or "Gateway"... it sucks."
.....Sheer nonsense.
See my comments above. My Dell with XP Pro has not produced a single bad burn yet. Oops...I take that back....ONE bad burn. After checking out the disc I saw why...this disc was hilariously messed up. It was supposed to be a Ritek -R 4x....I doubt it was even a CD-R....almost NO color to the die. I should have kept it....it was pretty funny. Didn't even get to the lead in... -

Also, I have no problem at all ripping from one drive whilst burning to the other. None whatsoever.
