you have plenty of memory and enough hdd space, really all you need is a new motherboard and cpu setup. if i were you anything above 2 gig for the cpu, but the higher the speed the better. amd is a good processor. it may be cheaper for you to just upgrade the parts that need upgrading, or if your not that good at installing stuff or you dont want the hassle then just buy a new pc. are you in the uk?www.ctech2000.co.uk
do good pc sales and offer good upgrade bundles as well.

May I recommend an Athlon XP (as fast as you can afford) and a Soyo KT600 Dragon Ultra Platinum motherboad. That is what I have been using for a while now and have had not a single problem at all and my system outperforms just about anything equivalent.
The real answer lies in completely understanding the question!

  8. So far I'm enjoying mine:

Intel pentium 4 Model D875PBZLK mother board with P4 2.6 512k hyper threading socket 478 processor.

I haven't done very much video work yet but when I get the time I will.

You can't have 614 MB of RAM. Do you mean 64 MB of RAM? That's a no-go, you want 256 MB mimimum. Celerons are fine, since encoding is roughly based on equivalent CPU speeds (it's CPU intensive, not RAM or I/O). 5-6 hours is about right for a single pass encode.

Athlon 2400, W2K SP4, 512 MB DDR266. Using DVD2SVCD it generally takes me about 8 hours for a 2-pass VBR encode. This includes everything from ripping to AC5.1 downmixing to BIN/CUE creation (that's about 30 minutes for everything but the encoding)

Some people do have wierd numbers for RAM if they go by the POST screen, are not techies, and have onboard video with RAM assigned to VGA, or have a Compaq or some such with those stupid 24 meg or whatever on board.

My 2400XP takes from 4 to 10 hours, depending on movie..

I'm already spoiled by the time it takes Shrink to do a DVD, now that I'm into DVDs instead. How did I ever tolerate the lost time?

And that's with the machine in the other room, dedicated, while I play with this one.

    Cheers,

    George

I have a AMD-K6(tm) 3D processor and it has 294,436KB of RAM. It takes me 10 hours to convert a 45-minute AVI to MPEG. So what kind of upgrade should I buy that's easy to intall? I am really new at this. Maybe I should just get a faster computer?
