You may want to check out "In The Blink of An Eye" by Walter Murch, the editor of Cold Mountain (and The English Patient). His insight into the editing process, as it transitioned from cutting film to digital editing, are inspiring and (not to scare you off) edicational.

The time has come to overthrow the AVID despots. Finally people are waking up to the fact that almost any modern computer can work with high resolution uncompressed video. And that there are a few more choices for professional editing systems now. No more clumsey user interface, and stupidly over priced packages.
