  1. I apologize ahead of time if this is a 'newbie' question, but I'm a bit confused...

Standard DV capture is AVI at 720x480. Great quality, and has 'widescreen' look to it.

BUT, to convert to a compliant SVCD it's got to be re-encoded to 480x480. So, I can either resize (and get distortion) or crop (and lose 33% of the picture)

What am I missing here? I've seen SVCDs that are 16:9 ratio, or was it something else?

    Thanks for any info.

    Yep, newbie..

Read the convert info. You can conver to 480x480 including the letterbox to perserve the widescreen effect using Vdub, avisynth, or TMPGenc. No it won't look right on your monitor, but on the TV it will.

Go back search the forums and read the docs first.

  3. Well two things. First your confusing the resolution with the displayed aspect ratio (DAR). This is fairly common take a look at:

    http://www.doom9.org/aspectratios.htm

for more info. Basically you can have a DAR of 1:1 (PC monitor) 4:3 (TV) or 16:9 (movie). If you plan to make SVCDs to display on your TV (long story short) they'll be 4:3 letterboxed to conserve the 16:9 DAR (that is they look 16:9 but are actually 4:3).

As for resizing, a bicucbic resize from 720x480 -> 480x480 will not cause any distortion of the picture, no really

You can resize in Virtual Dub or Avisynth and then frameserce to your encoder, or resize in TMPGenc (a popular encoder) directly.

I normally use AVIsynth because I can add a lot of filters, and framesever to CCE (another popular encoder).

Anyway, read the above links and give the capture/convert guides to the left a read and see if that helps. Good luck...
