dashed lines in dye on k-hypermedia dvd-r

i have some k-hypermedia dvd-r discs and noticed on some there are dashed line rings on about the outer half of the disc (dye side). i tried burning one and tmpgenc stated that the burning was done but it was only about half finished. when i tried it in my dvd player it got about half the movie over and it locked up and started making nasty noises. what are these rings?

Bad media. Khypermedia makes good cd-r media, but many have had problems with the dvd-r media. Try another brand.
