Hey there,
I have been burning CD's for years and DVD's for the past year. I use RecordNOW MAX, and have been pleased with it. But lately after no changes at all i am experiencing a very weird thing.
The disk burns ok and says that all data is burnt - it goes through all the relevant stuff etc... And comes out says "Disc Sucessful"
Then when i look on the disk to see what has been burnt (the purple side of the phsyical disk) i see 1/2 a band of "data" round the middle - then a gap - then a little more round the edge of the disk!
I have never seen this before, could it be a screen saver issue? I have run screen savers before with no errors - and the disk says it has been burnt correctly. What is going on?
Has anyone got any ideas?
Cheers
Charlie

i have read about this problem on topics posted a few weeks ago. the problem was with the laser in the dvd burners (i think most if not all the burner in question was the pioneer ao6). apparently the people that wrote about these rings was burning at 4x but had to drop down to 2 and finally 1x to eliminate them. lucky for them the units were still under warranty. hope this relates to your situation. BTW do the dvdrs with the rings play in a settop? and do you have a pioneer and have you burned more than 200 dvdrs? -
Hey,
Its quite possible that i have burnt more than 200 DVD-R's!
I am already burning at 2x. Are you serious that drive could be broken? Thats silly if it is because its not old at all. I have another drive that is doing the same thing that hasnt bunrnt more than 100 DVD-R's and its doing the same.
I do have the pioneer 105. Do i have to take it back to Pioneer then? Both drives?
Cheers

the person on the previous post that i was referring to stated that he had multiple pioneer drives, burnt about 200 dvdrs each, and was less than 6 months young. all his drives were exhibiting the rings problem. sounds like your laser is going south too. you may have to exercise your warranty...you are lucky
you get to play with new replacement drives, i hope.

Ah man this sucks! I gotta wait now to get a new DVD-R, well 2 of them! Ahhhhh. How do i go about sending the drives back to Pioneer?

contact your vendor if the drives are OEM; your warranty (if any) is with them, not pioneer. if they are retail you should have had warranty cards that you mailed back to pioneer. in that case contact pioneer and relay your situation to them. BTW do the ringed dvdrs play on your home player?

They do play on a Standalone. This is soooo anoying - will i just get the same drive back? and will it just happen all over again?

Can you possible post the URL of the other post you saw where someone was having the same problem as me?

if they are oem its up to the vendor what they do (varies with vendors). most likely they will have you send the units back to them and they forward them to pioneer for repair. or if they are nice they will give you replacements off their shelf if they have them in stock. the same might hold true if the are retail. just that you will be shipping them to a local authorized pioneer shop.
will it happen againi would say most likely; for i doubt pioneer has modified the laser and/or pcb assembly to address this problem. you will be getting the same (design) laser assembly as the original. you know...out with the old (inventory of parts), in with the new (AO8?).
if you do have to get new stuff you are fortunate for prices are a lot lower since the day of your origianl purchase.
Aopen 4410 (4x dvd+r and 4x dvd+rw) for $99 + $5 shipping at newegg, or NEC 1300a dual for $114. good luck. -
Don't know about a URL, but I have posted here before now having seen this for myself with a collegue.
Believe it or not, it was a weird media issue - about half of a spindle had the same problem, but with just the one "ring".
The recorder that produced those discs is still going strong, so don't write your recorders off just yet ! -
Hey there,
Jst an update on this. IT was the the media not the drives. Once i opened a new pack of media no problems just perfect DVD's!
Thank god for that. thanks for all your help. if anyone comes accross this TRY NEW medIA!
Cheers

good to hear your problem has been resolved. if you will what was the brand and media id for the media(s) that produced the rings? also what format (+, -, rw)? you mentioned they had a purple side. some good stuff come with a purple side...Ritek, Ricoh (TDK, Memorex, etc)....
thanks.
