  1. I've had this Daewoo now for about 6 weeks, and I'm happy with it. Two weeks ago I went on vacation, and when I came back I tried to play a DVD, but the tray wouldn't open. It doesn't open either with the remote or using the front panel. The TV screen shows the icon of a disk with an arrow pointing left and the word "OPEN" but nothing happens. Any tips, tricks or do I have to send in? Thanks!

I have basically the same model, actually I have 4 of these units. Love the compatibility and multi-voltage/color system/region free functionality. Sam's Club stopped carrying them and all my friends want one now.
I haven't had any problems with mine, but this unit uses the usual drawer drive scheme: motor>belt>gear.
Can you hear any noise coming from the unit when you push the open/close button (putting your ear right on the drawer)? There are a couple of ways to fix this, the easiest thing to do is push in on the drawer while the on screen display shows "open". Press with medium force several times and see if it frees up during the open cycle.
If that doesn't work, take the cover off and move the drawer back and forth manually while the screen is showing "open" - press the open/close button repeatedly if you have to (sort of shake the drawer in and out, maybe it will free up). If it does open, you will see the drive belt under the drawer toward the front of the unit, remove it and clean it with alcohol and a soft rag and replace it. It may have just gotten some gunk on it and is slipping.
Hopefully that will fix your problems. If not, send it in for repair if it's still under warranty.

  3. Thanks for the comprehensive reply. I called Daewoo on this and they said it's probably a belt problem - as you suspected. It's still under warranty, so they said to just send it in for repair, and they'll repair it or just send me back a new one. Did cost me $6.50 for shipping!
