Was doing some dvd-r to dvd-r work with my two drives on the computer when the drives stopped recognising discs and the the computer generally froze up. When I tried to do a re-start I got a message window pop up with "Elby Tray Window" not responding. I had to manually switch off the computer. What the heck is "Elby Tray Window" please anyone ? and why is it affecting my computer ? Antivirus and antispyware scans haven't shown up anything. Help appreciated.

Elby (Elaborate Bytes) is a Swiss company that developed programs such as CloneDVD, CloneCD, and Virtual CloneDrive. Some of their programs are sold by Slysoft, makers of AnyDVD and other programs. If you've ever noticed a program icon with a sheep's face on it, odds are it's from Elby.

CloneCD typically runs a tray icon when it is active. It functions to fool certain game copy protections that do not allow playing a game from a virtual drive and insist that you have the original CD or DVD in a physical drive. There could well be other uses of the "Elby Tray Window", I don't know.

You might try booting into safe mode, uninstalling any Elby or Slysoft programs, and re-booting, then re-install them if you need them.

If that doesn't work, try posting at Slysoft.com's forum, as I believe they support the Elby products there.

I've used Elby programs for several years and my experience with them has been good.

Thanks Squash. Now that you mention it, there was an 'AnyDvd' fox's head also in the pop up window. The only thing I have is an older version of AnyDvd, but no other Slysoft or Elaborate Bytes programs. What could I have done to 'provoce' the attack ?

    Beats me.

There's a thread over at Slysoft started by pup757. In post #20 he mentions the "elby tray window" error message. There might be some tips in there you could use.

    http://forum.slysoft.com/showthread.php?t=998

In AnyDVD, you can right-click the fox's head, go into options, and un-click "Autostart". It's turned on by default, but I only run AnyDVD when I'm actually ripping a DVD. And, of course, upgrade to the latest version if you haven't already.

Elby and Slysoft's programs apparently share a lot of code these days. You'll often see, for instance, simultaneous updates of AnyDVD and CloneDVD with similar changes; "better support for x64" or whatever, so it's not surprising that AnyDVD might be using an Elby tray loader or somesuch.
