The media has a lot to do with it as well, I'm afraid.
You might find one recorder supports a wider range of media than another, or hacked firmware is easier to obtain that removes the speed limitation safe-guard, but it doesn't just stop with the recorder.
Burning at a speed (or with a write strategy) not suited to the media will give unreliable burns and some players are fussy about what they play when it comes to recordable media. Just because you can burn at 4x doesn't mean you will then be able to play that particular disc back, so prepare to be a little disappointed if you're more worried about speed than compatibility when it comes to playing the damn things back.
