  1. TMPGEnc Plus is freeware while you have to pay for TMPGEnc DVD Author. the only other difference is that the former can also work with DVDs? it can do everything that the Plus version does?

do you mean tmpgenc and tmpgenc plus ??? because tmpgenc plus is not free and tmpgenc dvd author is a dvd author tool and not an encoder.

  6. TMPGenc Plus has more filters, options and better MPEG encoding, the best feature I found is that the PLUS version can be set to shut down after it finishes encoding...handy feature to those who encode while asleep and the PC won't run all night.

Also, TMPGEnc encodes mpg-2 (DVD). I don't have the free version on my computer but if I remember right you only get a 15 day trial for mpg-2 encoding- then you have to buy the Plus version.

  8. about $40 sorry, could not help it. actually one encodes (change one format into another, and the other creates a nice set of files ready for burning a playable DVDR).

To answer your question the way it was originally asked, Tmpgenc Plus is an encoding program that handles mpg2 past the free trial period (as others have said).

Tmpgenc DVD Author is an authoring program that accepts files encoded with above or many other encoding programs to create the DVD file structure that is then burned to disc.

Each, individually, performs a different process in the steps toward making a DVD.
