Sorry to ask a question which may sound very dumb to alot of the more expierienced out there...
I'd really like to 'flash' my Nec 1300a, I know it has to be done in dos and I know a bad flash will kill my burner.
What's the best firmware and how to I go about going about flashing my drive? I've read avery short guide on herries site but I didn't really understand!
Help!

I just got a new ND-1300A and flashed it to 1.08 tonight. I'd recommend that you make a Win9x boot floppy (basically, just reformat a floppy and check the box for copying the system to it) and do a DOS flash. After you get it up to v1.08, you can flash it with one of the 3 windows flasher updates on Herrie's site (if you want the non-standard firmware like region free).
To start with, I downloaded NEC108N.RAR and opened it with PowerArchiver. Then, I extracted NEC1x00A.EXE and NEC108N.BIN to C:\. There is also a README file that has some basic instructions. You just need to make sure your 1300A is installed as a Slave on the Primary IDE or a Master or Slave on the Secondary IDE channel from the motherboard. Then you use the appropriate flags in the command line.
My 1300A was the Master on my Secondary IDE so my first command was:
C:\NEC1x00A.EXE -sec -mas -out original.bin
(this makes a backup of factory firmware)
My second command was:
C:\NEC1x00A.EXE -sec -mas -flash NEC108N.BIN
(this erases current firmware and copies NEC108N.BIN in it's place)
Enjoy,

Why not just use the Windows Flash Tool (Herrie provides all his firmwares in this format now).
I have had no problems with this tool and have flashed my burner many times.

The windows flasher is much easier, but reading Herrie's forum, it looks like a few haven't had success with it. Whenever someone has had a problem using the windows flasher, Herrie recommends using the DOS flasher and it looks like that has always solved the problem.
If someone isn't comfortable booting to DOS, then they could certainly use it as a last resort. There are a lot of things that work best from DOS, including flashing firmware, so it was a natural direction for me.
Cheers,
Tim
