I have been shopping for some round IDE cables and all the ones i see for sale say ATA 100/133. My question is will these work with the older IDE drives? Is there really any difference in the cables compared to the slower standards or is it just a thing of quality where the ATA 100/133 cables should work for all IDE drives? Thanks.

A 133 IDE cable is 80 conductor, but still has 40 pins, same as a 100, 66 or 33 cables. The 133 cable works fine with the any IDE drive. If you have a 133 drive, though, you must use a 133 cable for it to operate properly. I believe the extra conductors are for shielding.

40 pins - 80 wires. 40 are data transfer and 40 are grounds to reduce EMI
