Does anyone know if, or have heard rumors, that there is going to be commercialy available DVD-9's? Understand, I am appreciative of the great codec tools out there but what is up with the DVD-9 format in the commercial market?

If I understand the tech side of a DVD-9's makeup, it is essentially two seperate DVD-5's pressed together. This causes no reason for compression by the maker (distributor, Hollywood) to compress the video onto a DVD-5. I also see that that thread makes mention of having to buy a new burner to write to the new format, but why? Wouldn't this be a driver issue in that the burner just needs to know where to burn in the two layers? I mean it reads the two layers fine.

If the burner uses a "read" laser and a "write" laser, I would see where the hardware would not not be sufficient. I would not worry, though. Eventually they probably will be as affordable as a CD writer.
