  1. hey everyone. I got a nec 1300a dvd burner but have been trying to burn at 4x and only can burn at 2x (actually 1.6x). I tried different QUALITY media also, such as tdk, fuju, etc. and they are labeled to go up to 4x. I have the current firmware 1.0.7, I checked the settings and its to max...anyone have any ideas?

Yes. What are you burning with? This drive is brand-spanking new, so some software may not recognize the drive, much less the fact that you can even burn at 4x.

Also, are you using try 4x media? I mena media that's recognized at 4x, not just capable of doing 4x with a certain firmware.

1.6x smells of a drive stuck in PIO mode. You have to be in UDMA mode to support those speeds (it's more of an overhead issue than theoretical bandwidth).

Suggest you get the "latest" firmware 1.08 and try again.

  5. sorry guys but how do i change pio to udma? The software im using to burn is instantcopy and it recognizes my drive. is it possible that the reason i cant burn at 4x is because the software? The media i am using is capable of 4x because my friend with a sony dru-500 uses the same media at 4x.

The solution is to take the drive out and send it to me.

In return, I'll send you my Plextor 504A, which burns +R at 4x with no problems whatsoever.
