    Hi;

    I need some help.

I have a Hauppauge HVR1300 MCE TV Card and need to capture from VHS to convert to AVI and DVD.
I am capturing from a TV with built in VHS that has a SCART output (the only working VCR that I have) and have a SCART to Composite connected into the Composite connector of the Hauppauge.

I used a guide on this site but it was an old link that contained old versions of the software required, I followed the guide but when selecting my device which is listed as:
Hauppauge Win TV 88x Video Capture (DirectShow) but when you select this device no video screen appears just the grey Virtualdub background although it does say Connected to capture device at the bottom of the screen.
When I select Capture Video a Capture Error window appears with the message "Unable to start video capture"
I downloaded a later release of virtual dub 1.9.8 and also AVISYNTH 2.5.8 and huffyuv 2.1.11 and followed the guide again but still no joy.

If I select Device 0 - Microsoft WDM Image Capture (Win32) VFW I get a video screen and I can capture but the file is massive as it defaukts to 320 x 240 24 Bit RGB
But at least I know my connections are OK.

There are also two choices of Composite?

Any ideas how I can get this setup working?

  2. VirtualDub can't capture very well from most of the hardware encoder capture cards.

That doesn't help much and Im sure I have done this before?

Anyway I found my original drivers CD that came with the Hauppauge Card cleaned out the old drivers and re-installed them.

I am in the process of wetting up Windows XP Media Centre (I am running WinXP Media Centre Edition Sorry forgot to mention that before) have connected the card to the Antenna but cant seem to find any digital services? I am in Andover so I have selected the Salisbury Transmitter? (I'll post this elsewhere)

Anyway from looking at the Virtualub link it says that needs a Video For Windows Driver to do capture.

The problem is I am a bit confused as to Hardware used in this card.

The tuner is I think a Philips FMD1216ME with a CX2388x and CX23416 chipsets are these Conextant.

Lots of guides such as this one http://dvdguide.ennik.com/ talk about using special software to run virtual dub if you have a BT8X8 card now this is what confuses me as this refers to I think a Brooktree Chipset which my Hauppauge is not.

When I look at the device manager and in Virtualdub this card is listed as "Hauppauge WinTV 88x Video Capture"

    Please help

With that capture card or another?

Hauppauge makes both BT 8x8 and Conexant hardware encoding capture cards. MCE certification requires hardware encoding so as not to burden the CPU while recording. The HVR-1300 is based on a Conexant hardware encoding chipset.

BT chips are "dumb" capture devices. They capture uncompressed video and audio an leave it up to the CPU to compress them. The uncompressed audio and video come into the computer as two separate streams. When using the Conexant chipset the chips capture and convert to MPEG before giving it to the computer. The computer receives a single stream of compressed video and audio. VirtualDub simply doesn't know how to deal with this already compressed stream with both audio and video inside it.

Many thanks for sorting out the confusion - so I have a Connexant based Hauppauge Card.
But is there a way of using Virtualdub with this card or if not what would be the tool/s option to capture video retaining at least the same standard as the VHS that I am capturing from

  6. I have never been able to capture with VitualDub using my older Hauppuage PVR-250 (another Conexant hardware encoder). I don't think you'll have any luck with your HVR-1300 either. Can't you just capture with MCE or Hauppauge's WinTV?

There are some other possbilities: MythTV, SageTV, BeyondTV. You might be able to capture with GraphEdit or GraphStudio but you'll have to learn how to build a graph. You can find more information at http://www.shspvr.com/

Another thing to note: once you get the digital tuner working the HVR will simply save the captured digital stream to a file. So it doesn't matter what program you use to caputre, they will all produce the same quality.
