  2. yes - the ffmpeg 2.0 plugin decodes Xvid, and does it slightly faster than 3ivx

edit: the codec is now called FFusion and is at version 2.2

  3. So close yet so far... 3vix wouldnt work at all (green screen, no sound). and now, FFusion 2.2 gives me video, but no sound. are there any codecs that work for sound only or something?

  4. try installing the divx 5.0.7 plugin. It works fairly well (but not with all the files i've tried) for decoding the mp3 audio in divx/xvid files. if that doesn't work, try using divx doctor 2 on the file you're trying to play. if neither of those work, you'll have to play the file with mplayer or VLC instead of quicktime.

  5. Yes the official Divx 5 codec can handle Xvid fine. It also parses the audio so quicktime can handle it and you can hear it without having to doctor it.

There is a small problem. Files that are tagged as Xvid encoded are not recognized by the Divx 5 codec on launch and Quicktime will give you a "plug-in not found" error.

The way around this is simple: use the excellent "Divx Tool" (can be found on verisontracker) to change the fourcc code from xvid to something like DIV or Divx or something. The fourcc code is a file tag that identifies the codec.

It takes about 3 seconds to change and after that the file will open fine in Quicktime with Divx 5. I've done this dozens of times.

You could just use Videolan client too. It plays Xvid no problem.
