  1. hey peeps, i should have asked in my other threads, but anyway, when installing or setting up the Xvid 1.2.2 codec on the pc in the encoder settings, is it advisable to "check" or "uncheck" the "decode all supported FourCCs (divX DX50 MP4V) box because someone told me to keep it checked and some tell me not to.

in this case im referring to encoding to Xvid using mpeg2 or DV files as the source files.

    cheers.

EDIT: I think this should be in the video conversion section, so if a moderator sees it, can it be moved if required.

  2. If you don't elect to decode "all supported FourCCs" then Xvid will only decode videos marked with the "XVID" FourCC. If you enable the setting Xvid will also decode other MPEG 4 part 2 encoded video marked as "DX50" (Divx 5,6,7), "MP4V" (old Microsoft encoder, I think), and DIVX (older versions of Divx). This setting has no effect on encoding with Xvid or any other codec.

Which you choose depends on what you want. It's easy enough to change the setting after installation. Start -> All Programs -> Xvid -> Configure Decoder. For example, if you find that Xvid isn't decoding a "DIVX" file properly you could turn off the feature and try another decoder (Divx, ffdshow, etc). Or, Divx has a sharpening option in its decoder. If you wanted to use that sharpening you could disable Xvid's decoding of "DX50" and let Divx do it instead.

Also note that other codecs may override this choice. For example, if you install Divx after installing Xvid, Divx will take over the decoding of DX50 and other Divx FourCCs. You can use a DirectX filter manager to raise or lower the priority of "conflicting" decoders.

  3. ok thanks again m8, i just wasnt sure if it made any difference to what i was doing with my Xvid conversions from mpeg2 files, so seems like having it on or off in this case makes no difference either way.

    cheers.
