  2. You have to buy a special cable for USB, but its possible, and will work with all versions of windows that support USB. However, those special cables tend to be almost as much as buying two NIC cards and a crossover cable. So think about it before you buy one.

  3. Hi I use a belkin direct connect. I use this as i have a laptop and desktop which needs linking. http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=1&Product_Id=66005
When I bought mine I paid something like £50. Maybe a bit expensive compared to using nics and cross over cables but for a laptop a nic could cost as much as £50. Hope this helps.

Also consider that FireWire is a supported networking device. I'm not sure how exactly it works since I've never tried but it's supposed to. If you've got FireWire on those PCs give that a try too. Even if only one has a FireWire card you can get a decent one for pretty cheap lately.

I have a USB cable with software on order. I paid $22.04 shipped. Will tell you how it works once I get it installed. I think it is cheaper than two NIC cards and cabling.

You tend to save a little money. NIC cards go for around $15 and a cable around $8. So for $38 you can get an ethernet network. It really depends on if you would like to spend the extra money for a future investment. The problem with USB is the expandability of the network is very limited. If you later got a third computer, you could not easily add it.
