  1. I have a Pioneer AO4 and generic media DVD-R from americal.com I’m finding that all my old disk won’t play any more in my DVD players were they worked fine before. Is anyone having this same problem or what media would you suggestions for this drive?

  2. That is a potential problem with certain media, low quality media can go bad over time (the dies, etc). Do you have any other media of similar burned age. How old are these media? Can they play anywhere other than your DVD player??? You can probably find good quality, low cost media, but you have to be careful to avoid this problem again.

Yes. I had the same problems. The Americal.com media was LeadData, Princo silvers, and Ritek G1. All of them were 1x discs, silver or gold tops, and they have since "died". However, it may be any number of things, including it being bad all along, player now dirty, etc. The "dvd rot" idea is still being pursued, having not been proven to date. Too many variables.

There is no difference between data and video dvd's, both are "data" disks. Have you tried to play them in your pc?

Buy Ritek, they make the best media

Do you have a Retail DVD to test with, does it work in the player? If your Data DVDs of the same media work fine in your PC, but nothing (Burned DVDs, Retail Movies) will play in your DVD player, it may be the DVD player (I have had a player die on me out of nowhere). Can you find another DVD Player at a friends house and try your DVD-R media there.

What you need to do is determine which media will work in which players/drives, and see if a pattern forms.
