I am currently using DVD Shrink to rip and CloneDVD to burn. Quality is pretty good but this newbie was wondering if there is anything better out there. Your comments would be most appreciated. Thank you.

Instant Copy 7, or Instant Copy 8 is a tad better, but take WAY too long, so what you have now is the best for your money.

  3. There is no best, it's all a matter of personal opinion.

Ripping - DVD Decrypter has the most features and is pretty fast.

If you're just burning the VIDEO_TS folder it really doesn't matter what you use. Nero has has some UDF problems but IIRC the newest verisons have fixed this bug. I just burn with IMG Tools & DVD Decrytper (freeware).

Hell add in DVD Shrink and it's an all freeware system

Vejita is there a guide available on how to use IMGT tool for burning? Again I am a newbie at this, I know how to use Decrypter and DVD Shrink for placing Video_TS files on my hard drive but how do I burn these files to DVD+or_R disc using IMG tool. Thanks for your help.

Hey Golfnut. I also am using the DVDShrink & CloneDVD team, and I have to say that it's the best way/method of ripping and copying that I've found so far. DVD Decrypter is nice, but it doesn't give you the simple GUI that DVDShrink does, it kinda makes you guess which files you need.

  6. Ripping/DVD5toDVDR/ISO burning - DVD Decrypter

    Shrinking - DVD Shrink 3

    Burning - RecordNow DX / Nero 5

  7. IMG Tools is free but you need Nero for it to work.

    3. Burn - Nero

My thanks to everyone for your help and input, sounds like I will stick to the dvd shrink/clonedvd combo, at least for the time being.

I'd tell you to try out some of the others, but that gets pricey sadly.

CloneDVD is really not necessary to burn with, you could burn with just about anything that produces compliant video DVD's (i.e. NOT most versions of Nero).

Gurm thank you for the reply, is there any freeware that is good and dependable for burning? If so could you tell me where to find it and the guide for how to use it. I am read where you can use IMG tool but I can not figure out how to use it. If I could find a freeware burning tool to go along with DVD Shrink then I would have everything free to back up my DVD collection or it least sounds this way to this newbie. Thank you for your help.

Most reliable combo for me is DVD Decrypter to rip and DVD Decrypter to burn (imgtool to create image)

RecordNow Dx and Nero when i dont want to create an image.

    To rip, DVD decrypter
To shrink, InstantCopy with the update. IC7 takes a while but I don't mind the time wait. Different tools depend on different tastes and opinions and needs.
When all else fails, buy an apex dvd player.

  17. I was using Smartripper for about a year when I was doing Xvid, but after I got my DVD writer I switch to the latest version of DVD decrypter.
For ISO DVD Decrypter is very easy with ISO-write, but for all other writing shrink with DVD shrink or DVD2one and then use Nero V5.5.10.42 in DVD-video mode. No coasters yet!

  18. I have used all the titles listed in the thread. I have found using dvdshrink to shrink and clonedvd to burn with anydvd running in the background as the easiest way to make a copy. In this way you rip on the fly and can pick and choose which dvd components you want.

One note on Nero. Many many members swear by this method. I can tell you from personal experience as well as parable I have heard on this and other boards, that it is not universally error free. No software is, but more people seem to run into problems with Nero. Present company included. In fact, it is the only software I have tried that has produced some expensive coasters. I'm not willing to muck around with it any more until the price of dvds is free after rebate.

    Good luck

  19. Not sure, what is the best car?
A lot of people are going to reply to this, and support your question, but it is so universal to ask that it makes no sense! I think it is up to you to do some research. I used to use SuperCalc, but Lotus and then Excel took over the spreadsheet market, but SuperCalc did everything I wanted, so I stuck with it until 1995, then finally went to Excel, but what is the best Spreadsheet program? I never asked that question, I used the one that did what I wanted to do.

Of course it makes sense. Perhaps not to you, but there certainly is a 'best' for each individual depending on the circumstances. I feel that in this specific case, the 'best' blend of speed, ease of use, and coaster free duplication is the combination I posted above.

At different points in time, you seem to have found the 'best' solution for your specific software needs. Not a single person here is saying their specific solution is best for everyone and everything. But when you cater to the needs of a specific individual, it is indeed useful to explore opinions on what is 'best'.

Could you explain the advantage of using anydvd in combination with dvdshrink? What do you gain by using anydvd?

That's because more people have Nero. It's simple statistics.
