I recenetly bought a 52x Plextor Premium. It had been burning at 52x when I choose that speed, but I just received some new CD's that were supposed to burn at 52x. Now its burning at 32x max even when I choose 52x. Does the CD dictate how fast the burn speed is, or is it a problem with the drive?

I believe its a function of the firmware. I have a Yamaha F1 and I've updated its firmware several times and each time they've added support for newer faster media. I bought a spindle of 50 Princo 48x CDs and as of yet they still haven't supported Princos at any speed so those 48x discs write at only 24x.

It is the media, if you got shite media then it wont let you burn quick. Have you tried putting one of your original disks in and seeing if the drive goes back to 52x ?

No I havent, I ran out. I got these 100 for like $29 and it said it'd do up to 52x but hasnt... Ill get some better discs next time.
