I'm using the Sharp DV-RW2U recorder. I have tried to input DV from a Pinnacle card on my PC. The video seems to make it thru with no problems - but I get zero audio. Technically, this recorder is not supposed to input directly from a PC at all - but the video gets thru anyway. I'm using a came-in-the-box firewire 6-to-4-pin cable. If I buy a better cable, is it possible I might get the audio too - or can I expect no better

  4. This is from Panasonic manual
    DV Automatic Recording (page 15)
Connect the digital video camcorder with the DV input. Once you
begin recording on DVD-RAM using DV input automatic recording, a
playlist is automatically created which is very convenient for editing.
(You cannot connect a personal computer to the unit.)

Select the type of audio recording from the Audio menu’s “Select
Audio CH for DV input” settings (page 45).

  6. Who cares what you meant, what you said was that firewire wasn't for audio, which is utter nonsense.

I think perhaps he didn't set up his software correctly and its not properly sending the audio with his video through the firewire port.

  7. I don't have any answers here,

But, I have no audio MOST of the time capturing DV form a camcorder to my PC with firewire.

I say most of the time, because I can do 1 test sometimes and get perfect sound when played back, then never have sound again after that!

So far I think I have had sound 3 times, and no sound 15 or more times!
I can't figure what gives with that?

Sometimes the first test has sound, so I figured it's working so I do 30 minutes, it has no sound! I figured maybe somthing is conflicting after opening the player? SO I reboot, still no sound!
Ok, I turn off the camera, unplug firewire, reboot, reconect camera, turn everything on, still no sound! I have tried many combinations! No sound after the first test!

But I wait a day or two, then my first test will have sound again! What's up with that??
Why would I lose sound after the first test, but restarting EVERYTHING does not get it back, then tommorow I have it again for the first test only all over!
I am getting sound from the camcorder speakers, and one program I tried has a preview window, it plays the sound also in preview!

So Firewire seems to be sending it!

  8. I would suspect cable or connector in your camcorder or PC. Try replacing one at the time (if you have someone that can borrow you cable, camcorder or PC card).

Don't know about everyone else, but it seems my problem is with the Pinnacle Studio 8 software which is not outputting audio. The audio doesn't work on analog audio out either (breakout box). Have tried 3 different versions of the software with no change. No problems with the cables. Will have to experiment further to see what's wrong here. I wonder if there's some kind of setting you need to make on your PC to get the audio to work right...

  10. OK. Couple of questions....

    1. What do you call "Pinnacle card" ? Is it FireWire card that was part of Pinnacle Studio DV bundle ?

    2. Do you have audio when you play same clip on PC ? Can you hear anything ? Try to use Microssoft Media Player to confirm.

    3. Can you hear any audio on PC ? Try anything... any mp3 song or wav file. Maybe you audio card is not setup correctly.

I have the full-blown version of Pinnacle Studio 8 Deluxe (the one that costs $200 and has the "breakout box" which can input/output from/to VHS as well as DV tape).
The audio is there in the captured files. It sounds fine and in perfect sync when played thru any media player. It just will not output audio either thru firewire or analog cable.
No problem with my sound card as .wav and .mp3 files always play just fine.
The problem either has to be the Pinnacle card not outputting the audio or some hidden setting on the PC to enable it to do so.
I wish this setup would work so I could just output to a standalone, but with no audio what's the point.
