Hello,
I'm looking at buying either a Canopus ADVC-1394, 50, or 100. I am wondering what the best way is to hook the card up and capture audio. I am currently trying to figure out if I should buy a new sound card or not.
Currently, I am trying to capture and convert Laserdiscs. For video, I hook my LD Player to my PC by connecting the S-Video out of the LD Player to the S-Video in on my GeForce4 card. I know I will hook the LD Player to the Canopus card instead of the GeForce4. However, I'm unsure of the next part. For audio, I currently use a digital coax cable hooked between the digital out of my LD Player and the digital in on my SPDIF card which came with my motherboard and works with the C-Media built-in chip that I have.
The problem with the built-in sound chip is that I can only capture properly at 44,100hz which is documented by Soyo in the specifications. To use the hardware audio locking of the Canopus, do I have to hook the audio cables up to it using the RCA type connectors and forget about using my SPDIF card? Can I buy a new sound card and SPDIF card and hook it up to the Canopus, so that I can capture at 48,000hz? Will that allow me to use the Canopus hardware audio locking, or does that feature only work when the cables are directly connected to the Canopus audio inputs? Does the Canopus somehow hook to my sound card?
What do you recommend? I'm sorry for such newbie questions, but the Canopus is expensive and I want to make sure I buy the right equipment to go with it and use it all in the best way possible. Thanks.

your sound card is irrelevant when using the canopus, both video and audio are transferred to your hard drive via firewire. you can download the manuals at the canopus site.
