    How can a DVD be converted to a Divx AVI at 700MB and be DVD quality? How is it done?

    No such thing as DIVx in DVD Quality. Intervideo's DVD Copy converts to DIvx. I have this program and use it to store movies (my favorite one's) on my computer set up as a Personnel Video recorder. The quality is decent. This is a simple 2 click program. There are other options available on this site. Do some searching uner the "How TO" section.

    Gordian Knot is the easiest (and freeware) tool to do this IMHO. Http://www.doom9.org You can d/load the software bundle there, read their guides and ask question in their discussion forum.

    As an aside DivX is on it's way out and xvid on it's way in But you can use any codec you want. Compressing a DVD to MPEG4 will not retain the original source quaility. But a 700MB properly encoded MPEG4 file (play on PC only) can look damn good. 640x480 or 853x480.
