  1. I bought some cheapo compusa dvd+/-/rw disks (it was a 4-in-1 package). The dye is optodisc. I burnt a movie onto a dvd+rw and dvd-rw, both of which played perfectly in my standalone dvd player. However, when I burnt it on a DVD+r, it could barely play it back. The menus were glitchy and the movie would not start (i couldnt navigate the menus to pres play). If a dvd+rw worked, doesnt that mean a dvd+r should also work, since they're both the same format and manufacturer?

To expect every writer to handle every brand of media, shows lack of
understanding of the complexities of creating firmware for any given brand of DVD writer.
I own this DVD writer, if you are going to use DVD-R, I suggest you use Princo's. I have burnt 40 of these without a problem, also TDK DVD-RW and DVD-R also without problems.
Work brilliantly on my cheap Coles Supermarket DVD Player!.

    Dont expect the impossible.

  3. You dont seem to be understanding my problem....dvd-rw and dvd+rw work. dvd-r and dvd+r dont work. Why in the world would rewriteables work, but not the same brand/type/format/dye of non-rewriteables not work?

Blame your DVD Player, not nessessarily the DVD Burner!, try it in another stand alone DVD Player.

I don't know the asnwer to "why", but I'll tell you that this is a fairly common problem with some set-top DVD players. My Apex will play anything, my Hitachi will play anything on -RW or +RW, but choke up on some things on -R and a fewer things on +R. I don't know why it is -- it just is.

I am having similar problems using the same writer. I guess the only way to be 100% satisfied with our setups would be to find the best media that is compatible with player and burner. Once you achieve this then you are all set for me I use Hypermadia DVD-R or Sony DVD+R on a GE player and it works perfect everytime.

  9. M problem is that I dont want to spend money buying 10-packs, finding out they dont work, and letting the other 9 go to waste. Is there a place that sells 'sample' packs, or single disks by themselves? Preferably not off the internet?

Most computer stores in my area will let me buy the entire spindle and bring back what I haven't used if they don't work properly. i'm sure if you ask around you will find that most shops are willing to help out. They see the potential for more sales in the future.

I doubt that retail chains would offer that service. I go to local computer shops.
