  1. I am new to this. Really not sure what I need and whether I need to upgrade (maybe easier to get a new PC) my PC.

I like to convert some of the old videos to VCD. how good a quality can I get. DVD is supposed to be the best but is it possible to use more VCD and store better video.

So far seems like the easiest way to do this is to get a TV tunner card. I think the asus is highly recommended. TMG and VirtualDub I think are free. And I guess I need a VCD creator software. Any good free one.

I have a HP CD RW, Iomega CD RW and a Yamaha RW. HP and IO have their own software. They don't use the roxio. I don't have the wnaspi.dll file. I used to use this direct CD but didn't really like it. If I use VCDplayer, I will need to install it. Any other recommendation.

The only thing I have to buy seems to be the tunner card. I have 1.5 GHz. Is that fast enough...or may be some of the newer PC even come with video input.

I just need some general guidance how to do this. This is all from what I read. Not sure about any of these. Thanks.

  2. IMHO the best answer for you is a Canopus AVDC 100, it's not cheap but it does a wonderful job. It plugs in between your vcr and pc and connects to the pc via a firewire port. Any number of software packages will capture and encode for you, I use Mediostream and Pinnacle products and the both work fine. With the Canopus box you get no dropped frames and can remove macrovision also.
