I am backing up episode DVDs using DVDShrink 2.3 to reauthor and save to my hard drive. I am then trying to burn the DVD-R discs with a Pioneer A05 using Nero or Record Now Max.
Some of the burned discs are readable in stand alone DVD players and others are not. All are perfectly readable in a PC and play fine. I can retry the failed burn using the same DVDShrink files and the second try might be fine. Using Nero or Record Now Max came up with similar results. I compared a "good" and a "bad" disc in Windows Explorer and all files looked identical.
What would cause the data needed by stand alone DVD players to recognize the disc to be written bad about 25% of the time while the rest of the DVD would burn fine?
I have had this problem with both CompUSA 1X and Memorex 1X media while writing at 2X speed using 2x4all hacked firmware vs. 1.30. I would have thought if write speed was the cause then there would be errors in the video. I have not seen any but I did try burning a CompUSA disc at 1X and also got a bad result.
Any suggestions or similar experiences?

Yep, i had exactly the same problem, even burning at 1X ~25% of my discs were knackered. those that seemed to be "fine" caused playback problems near the end too.....
Answer, buy some better discs. Always check out the media specs and your player specs over on the left. -
The media reviews often seemed contradictory from reviewer to reviewer. Could you suggest a brand you have had good luck with?
I have not encountered any video or audio problems. Seems odd that only the part of the disc that contains the data for the DVD player to recognize is repeatedly bad. Does anyone know why that might be likely to occur?
Thanks very much. -
May I suggest using Pioneer or Sony brand DVD-Rs? Those are the onlt brands I use and they work wonderful. Very high quality with no problems at all.

I'm currently using Nan-Ya discs, but even these are only 100% reliable when burned at 1X.
