  2. You have to have a mod chip installed in the PS2 system before it will work for backups.
    Not sure about the computer.

    Wrong!!
I made a backup copy of one of my DVDs and it plays more than fine on my friends PS2 with no mod chip or anything. I gave him that DVD-R to try as I was just curious if it'd play and then report it under media section: https://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia.php?selectmedia=465#comments

PS2 is very picky with media (make and quality) and that's what it is. Some PS2s won't play DVD-Rs at all.

    Wassup everybody!

Ok I thought I would give a little input on this

Any dvd-r movie will play on a ps2 cchippped or unchipped as long as you use good quality media .

As for PS2 games its yes and no about being able to play games without a chip .

However right now you cannot play a ps2 game without a modchip or a boodisk

You can use a swap trick with a no solder mod, flip top, knifetrick, swap card, or just take the cover off your ps2 and just use the plastic disk to hold it down.

You need to insert a boot disk first though.
Not all games dvd-r games will work but about 90% will if you have a version 1-6 Ps2 it will play 99% of games with a cdloader disk
Also no dvd-rips will work (dvd games that are saved onto cds long explanation do a search on "PS2 DVD-Rips" to see another post on the full details) if you apply a rip kit to them they will work but a chip is sooo much easier

Modchips are just stick it in and go no tricks no fuss no muss if you have a messiah 2 or dms3 they will play everything with no problem PS2 you stick it in and go (psone games you have to hold down the power for 3 seconds and stick it in and go).

You just have to be able to find an installer to put them in

But they have a problem playing a couple of games and dont boot everytime on the first try. (they do boot most of the time on the first try though)

a mod chip is worth the price of not having to pay for another original if your original gets scratched up

Also to if you are not good at solder points that are less than 1mm apart you better send it of to a good installer

If you need one let me know

    Also from another post :

A messiah 2 runs about $35 + shipping install range from $30-70 (average install from an installer that does a reliable job usuaally charges $70) so total cost is just a little more than 3 original games about $65-$105 + shpping ~$15-$20 back and forth runs you about $100-150
(if you can install yourself, it just costs you $35 + time )

A flip top or no solder with a boot disk costs around $44 You still void your warranty just like a chip since you have to take the cover off (even thought that is not a big concern)

Its all on personally preference but I think that the install price of about 3 games ~$150 is worth the peace of mind but to each his own It can all be done for about $44 also but you have to still swap.

When you add up the price you dont have to pay for rebuying the originals for your backups of those originals that you own I think $150 is priceless
(being honest I would go as far as to say if one doesnt have $150 to invest in a ps2 then it is probably not worth having, the money can be saved, little by little until it builds up to $150)

But hey its a free world and everyone has the right to decide what they will or will not have done to their playstation 2, Its their own personal right
As long as the person who owns the playstation is happy thats all that counts

  6. PS2 is VERY picky with media, for the cheapest deal go to http://meritline.com/dvdmedforson1.html and order meritline brand DVD-r. These are the cheapest in price but are still great in quality. If you Must buy them at the store, the following will work: Verbatim (spelling?), Maxell OEM, and TDK. Verbatim and TDK are very expensive, so I highly recommend meritline brand. As far as I know, DVD+r will not work. I know for sure that DVD+r does not work with playstation versions 1-3, I have heard some rumors that vesions 7 and up support DVD+r, so if somebody has tried it, please either confirm or dispell these rumors for us. Apple brand DVD-r does not work with ps2, so don't bother trying.
:)-The box said "Windoze 98 or better," so I bought a mac. (a quote stolen from someone who, in turn, stole it from someone else)-:)

PS2 version 5 and up ususally read dvd+rs with no problems some olders version from 1-4 can read them but most dont do a very good job at it if at all. Apple brand dvd-rs work very very very well also they are the pioneer disks but have the apple name on them. Ritek works very well and the TDKs use ritek ink as far as I know . Verbatims are great also
About 70% of my backups are on apple and they all work great.

It must have been a problem with the laser or the original disk was scratched or a bad burn if you apple didnt work right.

I misread, I mean the games. I have 36 backups and they all work fine.
    I use these.

Princo whitetops (DVD-R) work fine for me. So many people bash this media, but I have bought over 150 of these discs and have had not problems (media related) yet.
