  1. hi, a relatives toshiba d2900 dvd unit plays vcd fine but for SVCDs the audio and video are out of sync. The audio is just a tad behind the video. The discs play fine on my sampo 612n and a friends akai 200bl. What gives? How can I get it to play in sync? I’ve tried setting the audio to analog, bitstream and pcm to no avail. Thanks.

Does it happen on all SVCDs? Is the player rated as playing SVCDs??

According to this the player does not support SVCDs, which is why they don't play properly.

  4. Hmm, only one post on that page says the unit won't play svcd's. I heard there's a trick to get some players to think it's a vcd, do you know what that is? Thanks.

The sound out of sync issues can be attributed to improper setup. You need to setup the audio to analog 2channel unless you're feeding it thru a receiver. It's in the instructions.
Moreover, SVCD is now supported, although it's far from perfect. The SVCD's that I have created with Nero all have audio out of sync issues. But I purchased this player knowing that SVCD would not be supported. To my surprise, the disc at least tried to play (I did get picture and sound).

The thing you're talking is the VCD Header trick, but read this quote.

VCD support is spotty at best. And forget playing any SVCDs using the header trick. It WON'T play them. No SVCD support.
I'm thinking this player just won't play SVCDs.
