hi i have been trying to backup a dvd that i was given. i have tried using easy vcd, dvd2svcd, convert dvd, dup dvd etc, i convert the dvd to mpeg file on my harddrive but when i go to check the mpegs i have just created i always have the last 10 mins of the film missing from them. i tried ripping the dvd to my hdd using super dvd ripper but an error occured which would not let me continue. i am new to this i have only ever converted two of my dvd's to vcd before but i didnt have these problems with them.
if you need to know the mpeg files are less than 700mb each so it cant be win me 4gig file limit. my system in a amd xp1600, 40 gig hdd, 512mb ram and 64mb graphics card. can anybody advise me on how to sort this problem out? i should say that the dvd i am trying to convert was authored by a friend of mine on a dvd+r and it does not infring any copyright because it is footage of myself and my friends when we were at school that he has converted to dvd.
thanks for any suggestions
scott

sounds to me like the disk you are converting is damaged/scrached and the drive cannot read it if you have set the reading software to ignore errors it wll just read what it can and ignore anything thats unreadable if you set the software to report errors it will inform you when it cant read part of a disk . try cleaning the disk or try reading it with a different rom drive (if possible) it sometimes helps if all this fails then i'm afraid there is no cure the disk is unreadable and cant be backed up the only solution is to try and obtain another copy
i suspect the error with super dvd ripper was caursed by the fact that part of the disk is unreadable, try dvd decrypter (freeware) when it reads the disk it will try to reread damaged sectors if it continues to retry reading without success then you will know its a damaged disk (you can see the number of retry attempts in the left hand pane of dvd decrypter during the ripping process..... note rip in file mode and you will have a rough idea as to where the damage is by looking at the filesize during ripping) -
could be a ripper problem...my older version of smartripper makes that mistake as well.....has happened to me on at least 2 movies where the last 5 - 10 min wasn't ripped at all... (the animal and MIB2)
switched to dvddecryptor for those 2 movies and worked fine. -
but i can watch the whole dvd on my dvd player no problem so if the disc was damaged surely i would not be able to view the ending of the film as well??
what does dvd decrytor do? is that just for ripping the vobs onto the hardrive? if so, then what do i do?
id love to be able to back this dvd up, its one of a kind. -
dvddecryptor is just a ripping tool..it decrypts the DVD files and puts them onto your hdd. you need to process those files with other proggies...

dvd dykryptor will not rip the dvd to my hdd. i set the program up right as in the guide and it gets to 77% then it wont go any further because it is reading errors. is there no hope for me?

play the actual DVD for a couple of min. on winDVD/powerDVD right before you are about to rip.

unlocks the drive

and in general, just helps with the ripping process.... -

sorry guys but the dvd disc must be shagged, it reads errors and no longer plays till the end so thats really pi**ed me off. i should have backed it up earlier. oh well that will teach me, thanks for all your suggestions guys.
