  1. what is the best way to do that? without ripping the dvd to the HD...

  2. well.....that would be the best way...is to completely rip the DVD to the hdd first and then work with the files

    otherwise, you can try DVDx. it has encoding/ripping on-the-fly. it still technically rips to the hdd, but not completely. it rips and encodes a little bit at a time, so that the complete DVD won't ever be on your hdd. however, your DVD-ROM may be semi-continously running for quite some time, which is not good for your drive.

    so, best bet is to use smatripper or DVDdecryptor to rip the necessary files to the hdd first.
