Ok, here is my dilemma. After having problems backing up Gangs of New York and searching this site for the best way to do this I tried the method of joining the Vobs in Vobedit.

I follow the instructions, get it completed. Run it through Ifoedit and create new Ifo files and everything looks good, but....When I finally get the disc burned and put it into my DVD player it runs really strange. The first 11 chapters or so are great, all from disc 1. But when it kicks to the Vobs from disc 2 it plays fine but if you rewind or F-forward it starts playing the first part of the movie? I know this sounds strange, but its true. But if I don't F-forward or rewind, just let it play, it plays fine. And another thing, after the credits roll and the movie is over the first Vob from the 2nd disc starts again.

So there is my dilemma. I don't know if any of it made sense but if anyone can let me know if I did something wrong with Vobedit or what I would appreciate it.

I'm presuming you've shrunk the movie to get it to fit on a DVDR. I've had the same problems as you describe when it try to join vobs that have already been shrunk/transcoded.

Try usung the uncompressed vobs first, then shrink them after youve finished with VobEdit and IfoEdit.

Yes I did shrink them first. Why does shrinking them first cause a problem?

I used this approach when I did seven and stargate it worked great:

It sounds like you are not setting the VOB-ID correctly when joining it in VOBEdit. When I first tried this technique I didn't do it correctly either and I got strange results too.

I also would suggest shrinking it after the VOB's are joined and run through IFOEdit.

  5. This is something that my DVD players do also when playing joined VOBs. I do not think it is something that we can get around unless the DVD is re-authored with the new VOB set. The DVD player will always read the first set of "natural" VOBs fine, but will act differently with ANY added VOBs. This has nothing to do with shrinkage btw. In my experiences, I can only FF at 2x with added VOBs. Any more FF or REW at all will cause playback problems and the DVD will jump to weird spots. I have tried running the new VOB sets through both DVD2one & DVDshrink and I still cannot seem to fix the problem. I would also love to hear if anyone has fixed this problem that is familiar with it.

I use this same approach and still have the same problems. I think it has a lot to do with what DVD player is playing it back. Some are more particular than others.
