Hi All ---
I am new to this board and to DVD burning and I am suffering from information overload! I am trying to make sense of all this information so please excuse the basic questions. Here they are and thanks in advance for the help...this board has been a great resource.
1) It seems that there are numerous options to get the same job done. If I want to burn a single layer DVD to a DVD-R can I just use DVD Decrypter along with nero? Do I need to create an ISO img (using IMG Tool) after using DVD Decrypter? I tried that but Img Tool can't find the video_ts.ifo file. Why can't I just burn the folders that are created, VIDEO_TS, to the DVD-R?
2) Do the following programs all accomplish the same end result indvidually?
***DVD Decrypter
***DVD Shrink
***DVD X Copy
***DVD2One
3) I found the link to DVDR for Dummies and was reading through it. It lists an extension procedure to rip and burn a back up copy of a DVD using the following tools:
* DVD Decrypter v3.1.2.0
* DVD2AVI v1.76
* TMPGEnc Plus v2.56.39.143
* ChapterXtractor v0.961
* Spruce DVDMaestro v2.9.2915a
* Gear Pro DVD 6.02 rc07
Are all those really necessary or can I accomplish the same thing using one of the methods listed in item 2.
Thanks for the assistance.
Cheers!

Since you are new to this. You can try this guide all the tools are free...to get you started.

this guide gives good overview of most of the proggies:
https://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/141024
i personally use DVDshrink because it's user friendly, fast, and free. there's a really good guide here: http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/mpg/dvdshrink2-main.htm -
1) The easiest way to back up a DVD5 is with DVD Decrypter. Rip an ISO image, then burn the ISO image with DVD Decrypter (pics in the guides)
2) Much debate about the best way to backup a DVD9. The generally feeling is that Instant Copy gives the best quaility, while DVD2One is the fastest.
3) It's a matter of quaility (see the 'Big 3' tread currently running). For the 'best' quaility DVD9 backup you should re-encode with a good software encoder like TMPGenc or CCE. But that takes a lot of time, and if you want to keep the menu/extras some knowledge of the DVD filestructure. Option 2 does the same job faster/easier but at lower quaility. How low? Depends on who you ask. Some would say there is not noticiable difference others would say piss poor. -
Thanks for all the info and replies!
Vejita-sama...any idea why I can't create an ISO using IMG Tool. I continually get an error that states, "missing file needed....video_ts.ifo". How else might I create an ISO from the ripped files? Do I even need to create an ISO? Why can't I just copy the files using Nero?
Thanks again....appreciate the help from all!
Cheers! -
You seem to be confused. I think that's because you haven't read the guides:
https://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/141024.php#dvd5
Here's an outline:
1) Run DVD Decrytper
2) Choose "Mode | ISO - READ"
3) Rip ISO Image to HD
4) Choose "MODE | ISO - WRITE"
5) Burn Image
That works for all DVD5 backups.
It sounds like you are ripping in file mode but only ripping the main movie (largest VOB series) not the entire DVD. If you rip the entire DVD to the HD, then yes you can just burn the VIDEO_TS folder with Nero. However, it's easier/faster to do it all with DVD Decrytper. -
If backing up from DVD9 ( 6gb or more)
Rip With DVD Decrypter
COmpress with DVD2One
Covert to ISO with Img Tool Classic
Burn with Either Decrypter or Alcohol 120%
works on all players when burned from an ISO image.
I always use Rytek Dye discs or Yellow Datawrites if I am feeling cheap, bet Never ever Red 4x Datawrite, Grey 2x datawrite nor Tango Bulk Paq. Sh*t in, sh*t out!!
My burning software of choice is Alcohol 120%. I like the graphs, and the fact that you can mount the image as if it were a disc. which means if you wanted you could burn an ISO using Nero or Prassi and you could still run it through DVD2One (my compression of choice).
The brilliant thing also about Alcohol is you can also use it to burn ISO images... so you dont have to use Dycrypter... but so far I have. No comebacks.AMD 2400+XP| Pioneer A05| 512MB Ram | 128mb Ge Force 4 | XP Professional -

The problem was, remembering when I had to burn, in which mode. i ended up with different ones coming back. I read on this forum a post by Ghosty 6 that said he has always done his burning in ISO mode and never had a return. So I tested this by Backing up a copy of Biker Boyz and testing it a player that I knew would only play discs that were UDF1.02, and then in a player that would previously only play discs burned in UDF 1.05. For the First time ever I had done a disc that was essentially universal. I have only ever done discs in ISO since and have never had a single Coaster or one that fails to play in any machine. so far.....
So you can waffle about discs, but I am convinced that i am using the best possible combination of sofware & media to ensure the minimum of problems.AMD 2400+XP| Pioneer A05| 512MB Ram | 128mb Ge Force 4 | XP Professional -
No, that sounds very sensible blue.
I'll give it a shot myself.
So tell me - what are the benefits to installing Alcohol 120%? I've not used it yet, what does it do well that other programs don't?

MDS files are a bit like NRG or GI files in that they maintain whichever settings the original media was. Ie. if you create an MDS image of a disc you had previously made in UDF 1.02, it will write it as UDF 1.02 when you burn a new disc. For that reason I dont use MDS so much now. I am sticking with ISO. but i am still happy to use Alcohol to do it.AMD 2400+XP| Pioneer A05| 512MB Ram | 128mb Ge Force 4 | XP Professional -
we are drifting off topic here ppl ....... stick to the original question please
BUBBADAWG when you rip the dvd with dvddecrypter the default setting of dvddecrypter is to select the main movie only you will either need to select all the files or if you are only interested in the main movie (and not the extras) then you need to use ifoedit to create new ifo's.
the dvd spec is that you must have a VIDEO_TS.BUP and a VIDEO_TS.IFO file within the VIDEO_TS folder also you must have a VTS_01_XX title set along with the relevant VTS_O1.IFO and .BUP files
eg: if your ripping the movie only and they are VTS_O3_1 - VTS_03_X you must rename these files to VTS_01_1 - VTS_01_x and then create new ifo's with ifoedit... you can then create your iso with the tools you already have (its much simpler to rip to iso using dvddecrypter if you are backing up a dvd 5)
