no you dont need a dvdrom the disk being copied is saved to a tempory file on your hdd when using dvdxcopy....... other dvd copy software also allows you to save the disk image/files to your hdd

  3. you can first save your dvd on your hd with dvddecrypter for example and then copy it with your soft.
I don't know dvdxcopy xpress but it might have a file copy option, if not I don't understand how you can copy encrypted dvds because I've heard that most soft copy haven't a decrypter included

You don't NEED a DVD-ROM, but it would be good to make room for it.

    Why?

Wear and tear. You just dropped $150 on a burner. Now that's not a lot, compared to a year ago, but it's more than the $20 it would cost to replace the DVD-ROM.

If you only have one drive in your system, it's gonna get a LOT of use.

I have two internal and one external... the DVD burner is external on FireWire and I turn it off when it's not being used.

Add to that the fact that most burners (yours included) suck (let me repeat SUUUUUCK) at ripping. If the speed at which you burn matters at all to you, keep the DVD-ROM.

But, if it's just not physically or financially possible, no you do not NEED it.
