I don't think you'd be able to tune channels the way you have it set up.
If you want to use the GF4 as a TV card, use your VCR as a tuner. Run an aerial into the VCR, and connect the vcr to the GF4. You should be able to get the picture of whatever channel the VCR is currently set at then.
Personally I found Virtualdub works horribly with my GF4 - drops about 10/25 frames captured. Might want to try a different program. I find Virtual VCR works well. -
i'm having hte same problem, is it even possible to capture with a Svideo plug on the video card?
-
When I started doing all this video capture stuff, the card I had was a GeForce 4. Trying to get it setup was, lets say, a pain. Just when I thought that I had everything I needed, the card just wouldn't pass through any video.
I went out, spent around $100 on an ATI AIW 7500 Radeon, and about 30 minutes after install wqas capturing video and audio with VirtualDub with minimal frame loss.
The moral of the story, I have found that the GeForce 4, while good for games, is not the optimal choice for video capture. If you want to stay with your GeForce card, get a stand alone capture card. Otherwise I'd go with an ATI.
What I have done is built 2 machines, one for gaming and other general everyday uses, and one machine for only doing video capture, conversion and VCD/DVD authoring. -
well i'm just looking to capture video, no sound heh.. it dosent matter to me... i'm just wondering if its even possible to capture with a geforce 4 ti 4200 with an svideo plug.... ive tried connecting my TV to the card using Svideo cable but windows says it cant start the device for capture and none of the programs like Vdubb or virtual vcr work
-
You need to install the Nvidia WDM capture driver to capture with the GF4. I don't have a URL for it, just do a search. If you have any problems with the one you get, look for 2.08, it seems to work best.
I capture fine with my GF4, only problem I have is Virtualdub drops ALOT of frames, but other programs like VirtualVCR capture flawlessly. -
I haven't captured directly from a TV, but I'd assume if you have composite/s-video out on your TV, connect that to the capture card, install the WDM drivers, turn TV on, and capture away. You won't be able to tune channels however, you'll only get the one your TV is currently set at. :P If that doesn't work I don't know what the problem is.

thanks legion, its possible to capture from a VCR thats hooked up to the TV that same way right?
when i set up the drivers and it detects the universal capture device it says it cannot start, and when i start virtual vcr it tells me i have no capture hardware...
what i'm really lookin to find out is if a video card has a svideo plug is it possible to capture with it, or could it only be for tv out? and not video in? -
If you have the Nvidia capture drivers installed, I don't see why you'd keep getting errors. Are you sure your card has Video in? Look in the manual/on the box for "VIVO" or something. That is Video In/Video Out, meaning you have capture capabilities. If it just says TV Out, then obviously you won't be able to capture.

If you are considering getting into the realm of serious video capturing I suggest you check out Canopus ADVC-100 capture device. This little black box does a great job of video captures. Its a little pricey but I don't get dropped frames using it.
I currently use it to capture my shows off the cable box and then re-encode to SVCD to burn to CD-ROM. My DVD player does playback SVCD discs. -
still havent got mine to work
....i dont see how will work with this..i hook up with s-video...but on tv there is just video in..so how would it work has to send video out..corrrect????????
-
My setup is ... i got the wdm drivers installed from nvidia... i got the connector that came with it pluged into the card..it has 3 other plugs..it has s-video out, s-video in, composite in composite out...i have the svideo cable pluged into svideo-in..and pluged into to tv in svideo input 1...i run capture program and put it on svideo hit apply...and i get no picture
-
hmm weird i just pluged the svideo into my dvd player and turned it on and it captured great...when i hook to tv ...no picture

Ok forgive me as I did not read all of these posts.
Coax cable connects to tuners, not s-video or rca.
All stations are sent at a freqency on this one cable and a tuner selects the freqency/station.
A RCA/S-Video cable only carries from one video source.
You CAN capture from a GeForce card with Video IN.
You need a direct stream of video to feed into the card. It can not tune or select channels. That card can not select channels as it has no tuner on the card. TVs do not have TV out. Use a VCR as it has a Tuner. If your VCR is on a channel you wish to record, you can put that VIDEO OUT on the VCR to your VIDEO IN on your card and can then capture. Or if you have a Camera with a Video Out and want to record homevideo.
ATI All-In-Wonder cards have a tuner on them. Few GeForce cards also have tuners but i wouldnt recomend them. ATI also sells separate All-In-Wonder cards that do not replace your video card so you do not have to spend a lot of money on that. They plug into your PCI slot and have a tuner. Canopus ADVC-100 is a great option but im not sure I would recomend that for you for how much trouble you are having and their cost is a bit high compared with how much you seem to need and compared with other solutions like ATI AIW cards.
DVD players have macrovision although not all. Macrovision prevents recording. There are workarounds for some DVD players to disable marcrovision.
Your best options are:
Use/Buy a VCR.
Buy a separate ATI AIW PCI card.
Buy a Canopus ADVC-100.
Buy a ATI AIW graphics card to replace your GeForce. -
Ill just buy me a cheap vcr...dont really want to get a new card most cards i see only capture at vcd resolution unless you spend a lot of money....I capture with mine at dvd resolution without dropping a single frame..works pretty good...

How would you compare the results and ease of use among these different options.
(I use a Ti4200 as well)
1. Canopus ADVC-100
2. Dazzle Hollywood
Those would both connect via Firewire to my Ti4200.
3. WinTV PVR card
What I'm trying to do is copy a series of VHS episodes into VCD or SVCD quality and then transfer the audi into DVD format so that I may burn 6-7 hours worth (i have a total of 300 in VHS) on each DVD-R. My priorities are as follows:
1. Speed of transfer
2. Ease of use
3. No/extreme few dropped frames
4. Video quality.
The reason quality is down the list is that these are original VHS tapes spanning back to about 1989, the quality isn't great ot begin with, and I'm only looking to maintin the VHS quality of these tapes.
Thanks for any help. -
Um, are you sure the S-Video Connection on the TI-4200 is a Video IN? I have one and it's just Video OUT. Unlike Firewire, S-Video is not bi-directional. So you send a picture TO your TV, but not import video from it. I haven't heard of a TI-4200 that's a capture card.

I am using this card and you need the following. There should have been a seperate cable that came with the card that had 4 connectors: S-Video In & Out and RCA In & Out. This connects to the card. I use Virtualdub for my captures and, if my capture drive is formatted, rarely drop a frame. One of my captures is detailed here:

i got everything to work and even get a picture on overlay, however when i do the actual capture it says no frames caught. its pretty weird, i normally use ATI but got this new 8x ti4200 with vivo instead. like i said, i get picture, but when i try to capture , nothing goes through, i also even have the complete nimo pack installed. am i missing something? cuz i have picture but nothing pulls over.
