  1. I have about 30 VHS Home Video tapes and I'de like to convert them to DVDs. And some videos I'de also would like to convert to wmv(windows media) format so I can stream them from my web server. I will prolly would not be doing much editing, but I'de like to have the ability to do so.
    Right now I have a entry-level Dell machine P4 1.6ghz, 40gig drive, 512mb ram.
What Hardware, Software do I need. I'de like to spend about $1000-1500 in total.
    1) I'de like to spend under $300-$500 for a video capture card.
    2) I'de like to buy a DVD-R drive, fast and reliable.
    3) Whats the best software to edit these in, is it Adobe Premiere.
    4) Should I buy a new vcr, my kind of sucks, which one?
    5) Do I need to buy a bigger Hard Drive (40gb 7200rpm), more memory(512mb)?
    6) Should I consider buying something else?

I'de like to convert them in the best quality possible and also fast.
Please recommend me what stuff to get. Thanks in advance.

  2. 1) I use an ATI AIW 8500. This is designed mainly for MPEG 2 capture and it sounds like you want AVI to edit so better get someone elses opinion.
    2) A pioneer A05 or A06 I have an A05 and its very reliable.
    3) Adobe Premiere is probably the best, but is expensive.
    4) Maybe get a S-VHS and maybe a Time-Base Corrector.
    5) Bigger hard-drive 7,200rpm as big as you can afford (especially for AVIs). 512MB of RAM is fine.
    6) Nothing else I can think of.
