is there any way i can easily convert my aiff audio to a dvdsp-compliant stream (im guessing either ac3 or mp2, right)?
id rather have mp2/ac3 than pcm or whatever, and wont it save me space too? but i understand that the aiff i have now is compliant, i just wanna save space.

if you know of a good audio converting app for this or another easy way let me know. but it seems as tho alotta apps will only reencode yer audio when its muxed with video.

    thanks

im sorry but i dont understand what to do in this program at all. what should i do just to make a regular ac3 file that will play like any other audio, no special effects or extra sounds. its just coming from a standard all-in-one aiff track. cant i keep it that way and just have a regular ac3 with standard playback like any other audio format? apack seems very confusing...

plz help me out if u can, i just want regular surround audio, nothin fancy!

    thanks

unfortunately, the only aiff converted i know of (other than iTunes and Audion for OSX) is Mpegger (PPC). I used it in OS9 because it makes MP3 and MP2 from AIFF, PCM, and Sound Designer II audio files.

mAC3dec is a good one, but i think it only goes from AC3 to mp2/3 aiff etc.

    best of luck

    A.Pack couldnt be more simple.

    [1] Launch A.Pack
[2] Choose the Dolby Digital 2.0 profile. Chances are great your AIFF file is not multichannel.
[3] Click the left channel button and locate your AIFF file. A.Pack will confirm it will use the left channel from your AIFF file.
[4] Click the right channel button and locate the same AIFF file. A.Pack will confirm it will use the right channel from your AIFF file.
[5] Hit Encode. To create a basic AC3 file, all of A.Pack's default settings are good.

quick and dirty apack run through.

    open apack.

on the right side on the audio tab section, 2/0 (l,r) under audio coding mode

then choose 192 kbps for data rate

then choose the preprocessing tab at top
    compression preset, choose none

now select your aiff file, drag to the right side of the apack window over the word left, for input channels, a pop up comes up hit ok, dar the same aiff file over the right input channel, pop up comes up hit ok, now hit encode.

these settings aren't set in stone, but should get the job done for you, i would reccomend reading through the manual to get a better understanding.

note your aiff file must be 48 for apack to accept it, 44.1 or 32 won't work. you can use qt to convert it.

thanks pants, those specific directions really helped a lot.

antnyMD- i didnt have it set to 2/0, it was on the multichannel default. thats why it seemed so confusing since my aiff isnt multichannel. i just wanted to explain why i was confused, but u guys are right it is pretty simple after u set that, my own stupidity threw me off.

one last question- should this do the trick to lower the size (from my old PCM) or do think an mp2 would be even better?but thats a whole 'nother story as far as programs and encoding...

but thanks, i easily got it goin in a min

That should work fine, and offer very good compression; much, much better than PCM. MP2 is not for DVD Video, I believe, but for SVCD . . . pretty sure, but don't quote me. AC3 will work swell. The only problem that can arise at this point is if the source is below 48 kHz sample rate, in which case you have to use QT Pro to export it at 48 kHz AIFF, and then proceed to use Apack.
I like systems, their application excepted. (George Sand, translated from French), "J'aime beaucoup les systèmes, le cas d'application excepté."

nope, i already had my aiff set up properly, but i finished the process and it worked like a charm! like u said ac3 offered great compression and i easily fitted on one disk, instead of reconverting the whole video track to downsize it i just simply changed pcm to ac3. the final dvd works great and it was easy! thanks for the help...with this i finally converted my PAL source to a synced NTSC.

thanks again guys for the help
