  1. Hi, I converted a subtitled movie from DIVX to VCD. Now the movie plays fine but the subtitles wich were clearly visible on my pc are half cut off on my tv screen. I am pretty sure I have the screen set right, I tried both VGA and NTSC 525 line as the source in the filters. Both have the same problem, but using NTSC is has slightly less cut off. Does anybody have any idea how I might be able to get the whole image on my TV.

    Thanks.

Try using the program called FitCD

You can find this on the TOOLS page of this website (link located over there to the left)

Using FitCD you enter your AVI source and it will create an AVS script for you. You must install AviSynth. I use version 2.08 which you can download from the doom9 website
There is also a newer version but I am not sure if the AVS script created by FitCD works with the new version.

Anyway the nice thing about FitCD and the reason why I am bringing it up is because there is a function to set the TV OVERSCAN allowing the program to accurately resize your video with a black border around it. This will help to minimize TV OVERSCAN so you can see more of the image, including not just more on the bottom, but also on the top and the two sides.

So give FitCD a try. I find it is a great program. Also, it is freeware

    P.S.
You can also get away WITHOUT using an AviSynth AVS script by noting the resolution given in FitCD and entering that into TMPGEnc. I will give you an example. When I enter a DivX with a resolution of 640x480 and select VCD and 1 block of TV OVERSCAN it lists the resolution as being not the standard 352x240 but as 336x224 with a border of 8 on all four sides (which adds up to 352x240).

So using that information simply SELECT this option in TMPGEnc:

Look for the VIDEO ARRANGE METHOD. This is on the ADVANCED TAB of the MPEG SETTING DIALOG BOX. You want to select CENTER (CUSTOM SIZE). When you select that there is an option to enter the WIDTH and HIEGHT of your choice. Enter 336x224 (the value you got from FitCD) and then you will have that sized image with a black border around it. It will be centered on the screen.

    There you go!

You now have a border around the image to off-set the OVERSCAN present in any normal TV.

Please note that when using FitCD you have 4 choices of setting the overscan size.
