  1. I'm a little confused....I'm trying to follow the DVD Shrink guide and this is what it says :

[quote](4.) Select the lowest level nearest the DVDR/W 4456 MB size limit (5.). Lower level means less compression which means less video quality degration. Try use a level lower then 7-8(if it wont fit even if you select level 8-10 then I would recommend to split to two discs with another tool, but you can always try and burn on DVDRW to see how it looks like).[/quote

The levels are 1-10. 2 questions: Is the lowest level considered 1 or 10. And is this saying try to get as close to the DVDR MB limit (which is 4456 per ex without going over. Help would be greatly apprecitated

  2. You are probably better off looking at the green/red bar to determine which is the lowest you can go (lowest/highest IS a confusing statement).

1 - least amount of compression (best quality)
10 - most amount of compression (worst quality)

when you load your dvd in and it reads it, the bar will show green (and more than likely red). Remove the audio and subtitle/close captioning items that you do not want when you reauthor the dvd. After that, try to knock out the beginning and credits for the movie, so you JUST have the movie, If the bar is still red, begin going down the compression list until the bar is in the green.

Depending upon the media, you might want to make sure you leave at least 100 mb open as some dvd-R's have issues on the outer edge.

  3. Just to add a little to that excellent analysis, DVDShrink also "errs" on the side of conservatism (it's also adjustable if you want). I find that often I can successfully create DVDs that are a little in the red, because the compression is underestimated.

And make sure you're using version 2.3, which does a far better job at higher levels of compression than any previous version.
