  1. I'm trying to convert an Xvid (with .avi extension) to whatever is the best MPEG format in order to burn a VCD. (I tried the conversion tutorial on this site, but it dodn't work) I got the Xvid codec, but I'm not sure what to do with it. I then tried using TMPGEnc-(version 2.513.53.162-Free), but it gives me an error and shuts down when it tries to convert to MPEG format. I basically just kept the default settings for the conversion on TMPGE. Do I need to extract the audio separately using VirtualDUB? Hopefully, I can do it in one shot, since I am new to this! Here are the properties of the video I'm trying to encode:
(ultimately, I want to use Nero to burn a standard VCD on an 80 min CDR)

    audio:
    MPEG3
    16 kb/s
    44.1 khz
    stereo

    video:
    624X464
    29.97 frames/sec
    data 199.824 kb/sec
    24 bit samping
    xvid compression

thanks for any help you can give me!

Have you tried to frameserve to TMPGEnc?
    Hello.

  3. I haven't tried to frameserve, since I don't know what it is, but I'll read the tutorial. Do you have to separate the aud/vid, or can you do it in one step? Does this whole subject seem overly complicated to anyone else? Probably not on this site

  4. The problem is most likely the mp3 audio. TMPGenc doesn't handle VBR (variable bitrate) audio (mp3 or ac3). So yes, you should extract a wav file from the xvid, and use that as your audio source. That should fix it.

I prefer Goldwave for wav extraction, it handles most audio formats. Check it out in the guides section.

  6. OK, now I'm getting somewhere!
So I extract the wav audio with Goldwave. Then, how do I convert the video with TMPGenc? how do I set it to only do the video part?

Within TMPGEnc you select your Xvid as your video source and your wav file as the audio source. For more information try one of the guides.

  8. thanks for all your help, I'm almost there!

i'm still getting an error in TMPGenc.
I selected the avi for the video file, and the wav for the audio file, then it tries to start encoding and immediately says : error in TMPGenc: error in KERNEL32.DLL : and it closes the program
any ideas what may be causing this???

also, is there anything I need to do to ensure that the audio and video are in sync when they are recombined in TMPGenc?

I don't think it's a requierment but I have elimanated audio video sync. problems by using a video source with no audio. In virtual dub under video select direct stream and under audio select no audio. As far as that kernel error, I have no advice and will wait to see what the smart guys suggest.
    This is so much fun!

  10. Do as videocheez says. Extract the video from your original avi file and use that coupled with your wav file in TMPG. KERNEL32.DLL handles memory managment, interrupts, and input/output operations.
