    Hi all,

Assuming that it is available on the DVD, which is the best quality audio stream that can be used for SVCD?

How low can I safely go with audio bitrate without losing the quality?

    Thanks in advance

Practically all DVD's come with AC3 sound. It has to be converted to MP2 for use on SVCD. DVD's tend to use 448bit audio but often have a second sound track at 192bit. Personally I would not go below 192bit for SVCD MP2 audio. Also SVCD audio is sampled at 44100 but can be sampled at 48000,I find that 48000 improves audio on SVCD.

Does that mean I cannot get surround sound on SVCD, just stereo? Or am I misunderstanding?

    Cheers

  5. You can get Dolby Surround sound on SVCD, but not Dolby Digital (Ac3) sound.

DVD audio is sampled at 48Khz, SVCD audio should be 44.1khz. An SVCD with 48hz sample rate audio is non standard and may not play on some players.

Personally, I would say if the DVD has an LPCM stereo audio track, the use that as the source for your SVCD audio. Use a good quality re-sampler (ssrc.exe comes to mind) to resample to 44.1khz and encode to mp2 audio at no less than 192kbits, preferabl higher, for your SVCD.

    Hope this helps
