I converted a bunch of VCD's using this slick little proggie and didn't receive one error or warning. The files were MPG-1 352x240 mpg1 converted to PS via this program, with audio going from 44,100 to 48,000. When I import them into movie factory 2 it still insists on converting--yes I have the do not convert compliant box checked. Any suggestions> Is there a trick to this that I don't know about?

Well, Movie Factory is just a pain in the ass.
352x240 is in fact a compliant size. VCD is part of the DVD spec.
Try using a different program to author.

YOu patched the headers right?

I went with the default and patched the first header--should it have been set to entire file? I f this is the case do I have to redo the entire process or can I just re-patch the header?

If stock standard VCD except for the audio @ 48Khz, then it won't convert them. If the bitrate is non standard then it probably will try.
I used MF2 to burn many VCDs and never patched the header. Why are you patching the header??
Have you tried the TMPGEnc DVD program? It seems more tolerant and faster. My 30 day trial runs out today and I'll be buying it.
Good Luck

You know, I wondered that because mine are definitely non-standard VCD's :P My next resort was going to be the Tmpgenc but I was hesitant because I didn't want to end up re-encoding the entire collection (88 cd's) Svcd2dvdmpg seemed the best way. Unless I hear back from the author of this program with his insights as to what might be the prob, I will likely end up doing just that
Anyone knowing of way to convert Mpeg-1 to Mpeg-2 with without re-encoding would also be welcomed! Thanks for the input so far guys! and great prog Chrissyboy even if it didn't work for me.

Umm... how can they be "nonstandard vcd's"?
If they're 352x240...
- Gurm -
The bitrate is 2500 kb/s VBR instead of 1150 CBR. In hindsight I can see why i should have done svcd's but you know what they say about hindsight being 20/20 :P

I think I'd try your files as is with TMPGEnc DVD author program. It seems fairly tolerant to me. It's a 30 day trial so you aren't out lots of money trying it.
Good luck -
Thats what i ended up doing--sadly though the quality suffers when re-encoded. So i'm still hoping chrissyboy will have an epiphany and provide me with some sage advice as to why movie factory is so insistant to convert.

No no. TMPGEnc DVD Author, not TMPGEnc.
Different programs.

tried that..got this...
also tried running it with entire file instead of just first headers--same deal--MF2 tries to convert it. HELP! -
never did get this prog to make files acceptable to authoring progs--oh well, I just created a template in tmpgenc and let it run overnight. Maybe not as a quick but at least it works.

I get the same header errors for a bunch of my files. I have tried just patching the first header and the entire file. Also tried not patching the headers at all with no luck. If there is anyone out there with a solution to this i would appreciate the help very much. What i am doing is running the files through (s)vcd2dvdmpg to rencode the audio then using tmpmpg to author the dvd. Again if anyone knows a solution to this i would appreciatte the help.

Well, it seems you and I were in the same boat but I gave up on this program and just went back to tmpgenc to convert my vcd's to dvd's I never did find out why it didn't work for me and did for others but I suspect only the programmer (chrissyboy) can give that kind of insight.
Just curious are the files that don't work from a TV source and have had the commercials edited out? He says on his website that the program doesn't like these and will often choke on them--i suspected that was my problem so i switched methods, but never knew for sure one way or the other.
In the end I found tmpgenc to do just as good a job on conversion AND the end result works with all the common authoring programs. good luck. -
Your original post refers to DVDMF2. I revisted that program and noticed that it encoded or not more or less randomly. It was more so on VCDs rather than SVCDs... I can't deduce much more.
If TMPG DVD AUTHOR gives you an GOP/Header error then that is the source whihc is at fault. My program doesn't touch these. What you are doing when you reencode in the TMPGEnc encoder is basically turning the duff source file into a DVD compliant one AND you are rectifieing the GOP/Header issues. Thats why it works.
The other note was about TV rips/caps with edits. Well here is the deal:
In a mpeg program stream there exists presentation timestamps(PTS). These, as you may expect are used to keep the audio & video in sync. In the MPEG encoding process (TV card or whatever), audio and video may start at a different PTS or some frames may be lost during the recording. You will not notice this when playing back the recording, as the PTS info present in the MPEG2 PS will mean that video and audio will be presented at the correct time, even with frames missing. Audio and video will still be "in sync", as the player knows exactly, when to present the A/V chunks.
Now in order to do a DVD-VCD we have to seperate the elementary streams from the program stream and interleaving them to a new program stream after resampling the audio..
During demuxing we generate elementary streams, that have no timing information. Now - when you re-mux these streams, a missing or corrupted A/V block will lead to de-synchronization of audio and video.....
This is the issue. Everything will work but there will be sync issues as frames are dropped during encoding to maintain sync after the mpeg structure has been cut.

Thanks joepic.
The problem is that the MPEG spec (esp. mpeg 2) is very complex. DVD spec is even more complex. I reckon I understand about 15%!!! But talking about the issues due to the complexities without refering to them....well thats hard!SVCD2DVD v2.5, AVI/MPEG/HDTV/AviSynth/h264->DVD, PAL->NTSC conversion.
