ok i know that mpeg 5.1 surround sound is very incompatible, but i was wondering what if i convert only the video and i keep the audio from the source file. like i use DVD2SVCD and i have the option to use Source Audio. will this work on many dvd players if i burn it as a CVD on a CD-R?

No,the firmware of your DVD player controls it. VCD/SVCD doesn't support ac3 audio, mpeg only. CVD is a low resolution SVCD.

If you want ac3 audio than the other posters suggestion of a miniDVD will work but as he pointed out very very few DVD players support miniDVD.
