  1. I have this file that I downloaded, it's a 43 minute Divx file that is 350MB (w/ AC3 audio).

I also have this 43 minute uncompressed AVI file that I'd like to compress to match the Divx one.

Now, I'm new to converting to Divx (I've only used mpegs before) so I need to know what I need to do to make these two files the same size (350MB). I have VDub and I've installed the AC3 codec (so I could listen to the Divx file I have).

use this to help determine the bitrate

  3. I already know the bit rates. I found them by right clicking on the Divx file, and selecting properties. What I don't know, is how to make the uncompressed AVI the same size.

When I try to follow this guide, I don't see the AC3 option listed in the dialoge box:

to make the uncompressed file the same size as the compressed, guess what you have to do to the uncompressed file...that's right, you have to compress it.
btw, i don't think virtualdub can handle ac3.

  5. Here you go again, not providing any useful information and acting condesending while you do it.

You say VD doesn't handle AC3, but you don't suggest any alternatives.

Anybody here other than this guy have a suggestion?

Why don't you use MP3? And you must install a mp3 codec or else you wont see it in Virtualdub. If you read the guide I have links to a free mp3 codec and how to install it.

Because virtualdub can not handle ac3, not encode or decode it.

  7. I'd prefer to use AC3 because the files I've downloaded use it and I want to keep my files consistent.

For the time being, I'm having trouble getting lame to install. I've downloaded the RAR file from the France mirror at http://mitiok.cjb.net/. Then I extracted the files an read the Read Me file. The Read Me file states: "see the file "INSTALL" for installation (compiling) instructions."

Problem is, I don't have an Install file. I have an EXE, but when I try to run it, a dos window opens and closes before anything can happen. I thought it might have installed, but checking VD, I see that the LAME MP3 encoder is still not listed in my audio compression list.

  8. let me ask you something.
i understand you have 2 files:
1 - divx file that has ac3 sound.
2 - an uncompressed avi file (with what sound? ac3? wav?)

i think besweet can create an ac3 out of wav files, but i dont know
exactly how (dont forget to download the besweet gui too).
if the sound is allredy in ac3, then all you need to do is multiplex it
    with the new video file.

for multiplexing the new avi with the new ac3 audio, i think
nandub can do it ,its some kind of a hacked virtualdub so i
dont think you will have a problem using it.
HELL AINT A BAD PLACE TO BE

  9. The uncompressed file uses WAV sound. So I have to get besweet too? I'll go looking.

or read my wav to ac3 guide
    https://www.videohelp.com/guides?tools=&madeby=&formatconversionselect=WAV+to+AC3&ossele...&search=Search

But I would rather use mp3 if your source is wav and you are only going to play the video on your computer. AC3 is mainly for 5.1 audio or good if you are going to put it on dvd later.

To install the lame mp3 encoder filter read our description under the tools section , www.dvdrhelp.com/tools#codecs

  13. I must be missing something, because I don't have the LameACM.inf file.

  14. Okay, I realized there's probably an MP3 codec in the Nimo pack, and there was so I installed it.

I set the video codec to both Divx 5.0.2 and Xvid MPEG-4 and the audio compression to 224kbps MP3 but I get the following error message when I try to save the AVI.

"Fast Repack mode is selected. This can signifigantly speed up recompression times, but may cause errors with codecs that do not properly support YUV formats. Check your output file to make sure the input and output codecs are compatible."

When I chose to continue, I get the following message.

"Error initializing audio stream compression: The requested conversion is not possible"

I went back to my souce file and check the properties. Apparently my audio format is IMA ADPCM. What do I do?

    Thanks.
