  1. Hi, I need to convert Xvid files to DivX without (or with minimum) loss of quality ?
What is the best way to do this ? Is it possible to simply "patch" the files from Xvid to DivX, because they are both MPEG4 codecs ?

  2. They have to be reencoded, and as you know this cannot be done without any loss of quality. Use vdub to reencode, if you really have to.

You could try the FourCC changer. (Look in the TOOLS section). You can set whether or not the file is played back using the DivX, or XviD codec.

  4. so changing to DivX would mean the DivX codec is only needed to play back ??

yet gain the slightly better quality (subjective) that Xvid offers ??

Yes to the playback. The quality of course, would depend on the person who did the encode, and the time they've spent on it

Just use the changer (see the docs for it..it's pretty simple). It will use whatever codec you specify for playback...
