    double-clicking 1 cd-rom icon launches a program.
double-clicking others only opens a window with the files showing.

If the CD-ROM has an AUTORUN.inf in the root, then it will launch the designated program when you double click the icon. It should also run it automaticly if you have autorun notification enabled.
If the CD-ROM dosen't have an AUTORUN.inf ( such as a data CD) then it will open Explorer window when you double click the icon.

    Hope that helps.

  3. cheers for the reply
but i don't think that this is the problem in this case. it is the same cd (with Autorun.inf) that is behaving differently in different cd-rom drives.

Is this your computer? According to your computer details, it says you're running XP.
Put the CD into the drive you want to change.
Go into "My Computer", Right click the drive and select properties.
    Go to the "Autorun Tab"
Now choose what you want the computer to do when you insert the CD.
You can choose to launch program, open with Explorer or whatever.
You can do the same for any CD or DVD drive in your system.

    Hope that helps.
