Greetings:
I bought Chinese opera movies DVDs with no copy protection (16 discs of 32 episodes) from a video store in California. I would like to rip them into my HD for safe copy and view them on my trips instead of bringing many DVDs. Unfortunately, for unknown reason I am unable to do so. Effectively, DVDshrink 3.2 shows a Data Error CRC, DVDFabDecryptor 3.0.7 seems to freeze with no activity, and Nero burning Rom 6.6 failed to read these DVDs at about 50% to 65% while making an ISO file. I never have this issues with other DVDs that I purchased from the internet or Blockbuster store.
I have a Dell Inspiron 9200 with NEC ND-6500A 203D firmware DVD burner and running XP pro sp2.
Please note, the DVDs play fine in my standalone DVD players (I haven't tested all of them yet) and the Disc title shows LG_RC590M. I google but can't find anything related to LG_RC590M or LG_RC590.
I can't return them since I am already back in my hometown in NY.
Am I missing something? Is the problem from my end or the store where they may use a non standard equipment or could it be the media?
Any help to resolve this issue is greatly appreciated.

CRC errors on an unprotected disc indicate it is damaged. This could be due to scratches, or it could simply be a bad burn or pressing. There are many posts here attesting to the often poor quality of these types of disc. You may get it to rip using a different drive, but chances are this was screwed before it shipped.
As it is unprotected, you could just use any standard disc recovery tool. ISOPuzzle is very persistent and might be worth a try.Read my blog here.

You ca also try dvdisaster to recover your video.

What's a good setting for IsoPuzzle? Is it unreasonable to select the "never give up" option if there are like close to 200,000 bad sectiors? At what point should I really give up? I'm trying to back up some discs for my mom, and I suspect they are bad burns/bad presses... Even though DVDFab Decrypter was able to finish a few of them, the end result was a lot of freeze-ups and pixelations, which I suspect was because DVDFab was skipping the errors it couldn't read. I haven't had one successful project finished with IsoPuzzle yet, so I don't know what to expect at the end.
(The longest session I've had using IsoPuzzle is about 24 hours... But I canceled it because I wasn't sure if I was causing damage to the DVD drive by running it continuously for so long.) -
It turns out that I don't need any of these tools for now.
I call the store up, send back the defective discs and they replace with new ones.
Thank you all for your help and advice. These tools may come handy in the future.
