  1. Is there some DVD format that accepts Divx files? Are they simply in place of the Mpeg2 files? Is the format similar to SVCD but with Divx?

  2. No

Since it doesn't exist, no again

    See above

You said Divx but did you mean DivX or DIVX? DivX is a MPEG4 compression format that can only be played on the computer. DIVX was a DVD format but forward by Circuit City (and backed by a few companies, eg Disney) for rental DVDs. Bascally your DVD player would be hooked to a modem (56k), you would rent/buy the DVD then pay a fee to unlock it for 2-3days, after which the disc would lock again. The DIVX format is dead (although there some more reports/rumors that Disney is pushing a similar disposable DVD).

  3. well...he said divx files, so i would assume he is in fact talking about the mpeg4 compression and not Circuit City's braintrust.

    YES!!!

There are standalone DVD players that can play DivX!!!

    Check this link : http://www.hb-direct.com/uk/index.html

Click on products and then DVD PLAYERS!!!
Here you'll find the H&B DX 6526 which is capable of playing DivX 3.11, 4 and 5!!! And ofcourse also DVD/AudioCD/VCD/MP3/PhotoCD.
This player is based on the KiSS DVD Player DP-450 which was the first DVD player capable of playing DivX!!!

  6. I guess my primary question is this:

If I had one of these players how would I create discs that with Divx files that it could read?

Yes, I meant Divx/Mpeg4 files. I understand that players are starting to arrive that support it, but I have heard nothing about what format the discs must be in. Is it standard DVD disc format with Divx files instead of the Mpeg2 files of normal DVD? Is the format more like SVCD where there is a directory structure familiar to a computer?

I think with one of these players one could burn just a plain cheap CDR with mpeg4 files and it will play the movie. So the advantage would be that you could get near DVD quality on standard CDR media.

    Format? Come now :P

It should look just like an MP3 disk, browse the auto menu and click play.

As a test, I did some 2-pass 2 GB DivX. Talk about 'Perfect' encodes, perfect for 2/disk backups.
