  1. Got a Phillips 5920 that plays divx and upconverts but just found out some of my anime fansubs have GMC and the player doesn't support that. Is there a player out there that does support GMC, divx and upconverts? Checked around the forums with success. Thanks.

This is gonna be a tough one. I got curious and did a little research. I found this review (no date on it so I have no idea how current it is):

However, the player failed on a 3 warp point test with GMC and passed a 1 warp point test. Various players by "RJ Tech" claim to support GMC. The problem seems to be that while it is possible to find support for 1 warp point GMC on some players, I'm not sure if anything supports 3 warp points and I have the impression that if people use GMC, they usually use 3 warp points. You'll need to find out how many warp points your GMC uses. If it's 3, you may be out of luck. If it's just 1, you probably can find a player that can support it.

You can always re-encode to get rid of GMC. It's not ideal, but you can do it. You might ask why the anime fansubbers use GMC when they probably know it's bad for playback. My experience is that the quality gains are minimal at best from using it and given the playback problems it poses for most DVD players, it's not worth the bother to use it, but I'm sure many would disagree. Upconverting players are highly overrated and if you have a good enough HD TV, you may well find that your TV does a better job of upconverting than cheaper DVD players do.

  3. The Philips DVP-5960 and 5982 support 1 warp point GMC which is what Divx uses. Xvid uses 3 warp point GMC. I don't know of any players that support 3 warp point GMC.

  4. My player is actually the 5960, not 5920. Sorry. Some of the files must be xvid then since they don't play right. Looks like reencoding is the only option.

  5. I tried an Xvid file with 3 warp point GMC on my 5960 and it gave me an error message -- something like "unsupported GMC". A Divx file with 1 warp point GMC played but it did jerk on occasion. I was playing a small test file off a USB stick.
