  1. After graduating from xVCD, I tried my hand at my first SVCD. I used AVI_IO + huffyuv to capture a VHS video at 480x480 from a TV card, used Vdub to frameserve it as-is (ie. interlaced) to TMPGEnc.

I used TMPGEnc's SVCD template with the interlace options, as I should, right? Burned with Nero just to test.

The resulting video had black bars on either side of it. I'm sure I picked the wrong 4:3 aspect ratio in TMPGEnc. But more importantly, it seemed to be jumpy, almost constantly "shimmering".

My DVD player is a Pioneer DV-525.

Any ideas of what I did wrong?

  2. The "shimmering" sounds like the good old field-ordering problem. There's always a 50/50 chance of getting it wrong.

Go to the advanced tab in TMPGenc and change the "Field order" setting. (There are only two settings, just switch from one to the other.) Then try once more.

But this won't help the black bars.

  3. Considering I am used to making non-interlaced VCD's, that's probably it. I've never made a interlaced video before.

I'll try it out. Thanks for the tip!
